To link or not to link?

I do not have any outbound links on my site as I was advised years back that it was not a good idea. However, I have recently been told that I should have some outgoing links to relevant sites as this will boost my search engine rankings. My site is currently a Page Rank 6. May I have your opinions, please?

Hi forefathers,

Having links to websites or webpages related to your articles/website helps increase your pages' relevance to target keywords so it helps to have some external links. Backlinks from sites related to yours or are within the same niche are more helpful to increasing your rank though.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

I have a travel site and I only link to sites that gives information that I don't want to spend a lot of time on or that isn't going to send my viewers to a place to spend money. I will send people to government sites to find out about tourist visas or to find out more about getting an international drivers license. Things like this makes your site more trustworthy because you aren't trying to keep people on your site and tells your visitor that there are things that others know more about then you.

I had always heard you want to keep people on your site to keep your bounce rate lower. If people are sent to other sites then someone else is getting the juice.

There is a lot of debate about this. I do it a lot, especially on my blogs. If you are linking to other sites, they are more likely to link to you. this is really helpful if you are trying to engage other business owners in your niche, and build goodwill with them.

Usually, I look at it on a page by page basis. my main "money pages" Ie.. author name pages, high crisis and product name pages I only link to the product. I try to keep these pages highly targeted to getting the sales or opt ins to my list.

However, with more general pages, it is okay to link out to other sites. This helps build goodwill with those website owners, and it provides quality content for your readers.

When you are working online, you CANNOT think only about SEO. you have to think about how it affects your customers.

If you become known as a quality resource for news within your niche, people will come back to your site time and time again. Otherwise, people come once, might buy a product, and you never see them again.

Remember, everyone who buys a product will make you a profit, but you make your living off the people who come back to buy from you over and over again.
