 First focus on SEO. SMM can bring good instant traffic but SEO will give you constant traffic for months and years.

 SEO and SMM both are important, SEO is the process of gaining website traffic through organic search results from search engines and SMM is a marketing strategy that utilizes social media sites to gather traffic. As for generating good traffic SEO take more effort as well while SMM generates traffic easily and faster.
In SEO, for generating traffic or to rank your page on SERP, it gonna take more time as compared to SMM.

 They both have a huge impact on your rankings. If you do SEO without any kind of SMO or SMM, you're missing out on a huge potential avenue for connecting to your customers off your website. You can use SMM to direct people back to your website, which helps boost rankings through additional traffic and social signals.

But if you do SMM without any kind of SEO – you're making it hard for people to find you organically outside of social media.

SMM is paid and SEO is a natural way of getting traffic

 Based on a variety of variables, the amount of SEO vs. SMM you do for your company can differ.

Some keywords, because of the amount of rivalry that's out there, would be almost impossible to rank for. In Google's view, the more traffic a domain receives, and the older a website becomes, the more credible it becomes. Thus, it's extremely hard to rate higher than heavy-hitters like Wikipedia, Amazon, and the like organically.
