You haven't necessarily gone wrong.
The sitemap file generated by the Google XML Sitemaps plugin isn't a page for users to view. It is a special file that search engines look for so they know how to browse your site (they aren't as good at picking out links as humans are).
It is possible to see it in your browser if you just want to check that it is there.
Login to your admin area, then go to Settings > XML-Sitemap. Scroll down to "Location of your sitemap file" and you will see "Detected URL". You can copy and paste this into your browser, or just click the link.
