Joe mentioned EDU sites... well there is the "Trusted Sites Tool" which will find you EDU sites and even sort by PR.
Getting 100% relevant links is ideal but not always possible. I'm guessing there aren't hundreds of flight simular blogs or websites out there. So many times you have to branch elsewhere. Focus on relevant links but non-relevant links still help.
Follow vs. No-Follow is whole other story. There is a lot of debate as to the usefulness of No-Follow links but remember that naturally a search engine would expect to see a wide variety of links including no-follow.
And even thought they may be no-follow for Google, that might not be the case for yahoo, msn, and other search engines.
I think it should be pretty obvious that this niche/website is a bit more of a challenge and everyone is going to find Niches that are. Will it make him money? Of course but maybe not as much as the WOW site. Or maybe it will but it's going to take a lot more effort. You never really know.
Find something that does work for you and milk it for everything it's worth.
And I'm sure there will be an update at some point but remember that SEO results can take many many months. Maybe PPC didn't work out. Or maybe it would but that might defeat the purpose of the bootcamp. (I just checked and didn't see any obvious PPC advertising).
So it may be many more months before Mark's website gets somewhere with SEO and he has some results to share. Otherwise it would just be a waste of everyone's time.
