thanks Michelle. what about all links combined from other sources like your blog, RSS, forum comments etc. is 100 per day ok, 200, 500?

really? so few? seems you could get 10 links just by submitting a couple of articles, replying in some forums and doing some blog posting

bah, you can do more than that. I sometimes do 50-100/ day. I would not do much more than 100 though

I've heard so many different ideas about this it's just crazy confusing.
Is it more a matter of "link velocity", that is... if you do 50/day for a week then none, does that raise flags? Or is it just completely random what sites end up being subject to search engine dance?

I'd say that link velocity is a situational type thing. If you are getting 200 strong, reputable and relevant back links organically per day because you have strong content (i.e. someone like perez hilton with a huge readership) nothing is really suspicious. Once you start purchasing links and buying directory listings is when you want to keep it under control. Not only because too rapid of a growth in links will look suspicious but it also adds to your possibility of getting links from a "bad neighborhood" site, which will negatively effect your site, potentially even getting it banned from the google index (meaning you wont be found on google no matter how many links you have).
