If your pop-ups are categorized under the circumstances that Google has mentioned below:

pop-ups that covered part of the main content when the user clicked on to a page
an intermediary webpage that had to be dismissed before the main content could be seen
an ad that filled the web browser's screen so users had to scroll down "below the fold" before they could see the material they wanted

I think pop-ups are still okay as long as they do not interfere with the user experience in reading the content of the site. Like for example, you can instead place the pop-up upon exiting the page instead of displaying the pop-up upon entrance.

I was thinking if it will affect those websites who give you a email subscribe form when opening the page, is that a kind of ads?

If this category comes under the Google circumstances definitely it will get affected. But right now, I am also not aware of this news. Thanks for updating us.

Hi Mary,

Yes. Its better to set up the pop up upon exit. How about the mobile version? The popup covers up the entire screen and kinda a difficult to find the close button.

Hi Sunil,

For now, I think it is better to disable the pop-up on mobile. Just place the ordinary sign-up form on the sidebar.

Don't act like paranoid...
In fact, google suggest now for some sites/traffic to use interstitial ads! So how does it is different than a popup?

Ermmmm...pardon me? Who are you calling a paranoid? BBC news just released that news and I was just concerned over it. That's why I posted the topic here to make sure nothing is really affected.

I believe we all can read news from google, right?

And 'don't act like paranoid' is different than being a one...anyway, I'm not going to argue with you. Do what must be done ;) The only people who start acting in panic for each news coming from google are the newbies...

This is a place for sharing. Not for any form of arguments. I was just sharing a news and asking for opinions. That's all.

Just don't use the word paranoid. It doesn't sound good. Yes. Do what must be done and keep well-informed.

Google makes sure user-experience better without INTERRUPTION. This is the reason why Google punishes pop-ups. However, you can use pop-ups by setting up some options such as wtime deplay, notify bar, bottom left/right, scrolling etc. Make sure user-experience best without interruption.

Pop-ups, too many affiliate links kill the beauty of an article. Use of pop-ups in a subtle way is OK. Entirely depending on it is wrong...
