Fluctuating Google rankings?

Hi everyone,

Just read yet another article on Google and their frequent algorithm changes. Like most articles on this topic, it advises to create good content and just play ball with Google's rules but it also gave some good tips for anyone experiencing fluctuating rankings...worth having a look at.

Cheers,
Nic.

Hi Nic,

Thanks for sharing! I agree with the article. Google changes their algorithms all the time, some minor, some are major and the best you can do is to keep up your site's quality and be consistent. As Sam mentioned in his blog post on the Google EMD algorithm, Google is not at all consistent on these algorithm changes so it's best to move away from Google and look at other sources of traffic.

Have a good day!

Thanks for the article. I subscribe to my daily fix and I missed that one. A lot of people have been reporting fluctuating traffic.

One of my sites was all over page one, but now it is back in the first position and I hope it stays there! I've had other sites lose their ranking after the last update and I may not renew the domain next year.

Hi Nic,

Thanks for sharing.

Quoting from the article:
How do you work with these algorithms when they are set out to play with your mind?

Keep everything natural.
Don’t react to every movement in the search engine results.
Keep your site 100% clean.
Only gain natural links and ensure your link profile is natural (for example, not crammed with just directories or just blog posts).
Think about what you are doing with your website and make sure it is to improve the users’ experience on your website.
Do not try to trick the search engine in any way.
Make sure your content reads naturally; don’t try to cram in keywords and variations.

The above tips are not at all surprising. In fact, we should be aware of these things already as these are the same principles that Google tries to implement when it comes to ranking in their search engine. The difference now is G got strict with their rules.

Hello all.

Thanks for the article Nic.
I noticed that it did not mention keeping your webpage as relivant as possible.

From what I have found, Google is striving to rank sites largely by relivance to the keyword phrase. For example I have a world of warcraft site that was #1 for the phrases world of warcraft strategy guide and wow strategy guide up untill Googles penguin update. It is now #4 and #3. "Superiorwowguide.com"

I am bringing this up for two reasons, first to offer a possible explanation why other people's sites may have dropped in ranking and second to get some opinion's.

The question I want to bring up is should we be writing our pages a bit more like a sales page if the keyword implies it. If you Google the keywords I stated above you will see that my #1 spot has been replaced by a amazon sales page and other sites that have gone up in rank seem more like a sales page.

I am planning on revising my homepage to talk more about the wow strategy guide that I am promoting on it to see if I can get my #1 spot back.

Any thoughts

Hi Paul,

I agree with you. Google ranks pages based on their relevance to the target keyword. But you are right in that this does not seem to be the case at times. You have a good theory there and it is worth looking into. I think Amazon and other sales pages rank for the keyword you mentioned because a lot of users are referred to their sites for that keyword.

My two cents. Have a good day!

I know in my case that my first 2 websites were based on what I was told when I started and before I found Mark's site and they were more like sales pages but still had some good info, However my main site now was written more towards information and less towards sales but with a lot of real good info and once I got on page 1 it pretty much stays where it is all the time. I add little things to improve it and get a few more links every week trying to get from position 4 and 5 to #1. But in my niche I am still in need of a way to get my viewers to come back after learning all I have shown them and buy something without turning the end or middle of my article into a sales page and without having my page go backwards in rank.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the update and I'm glad that you made quite an improvement with regards to your web content. Have you already tried using newsletters? Getting your own list through newsletters will eventually increase your sales.

Due to Penguin update, some keywords of my site has dropped down drastically. From third position to 50th position. Trying to get back the same position. But position is frequently changing.

Hi forex4you.asia4,

It is best that you re-evaluate your website, especially the backlinks. Try to erase the bad ones before creating backlinks again.

And yes, since the algo/changes in Google have just been released, it is expected that the sites' rankings are constantly changing.

So you do not have to worry about this and just clean up your website for bad links, re-evaluate your website, and build more quality links.
