1. Log on to your wordpress dashboard.
2. Click on Posts or Pages depending on the type of entry, post or page, where you inserted the image.
3. Click Edit for the post or page where the image is.
4. Make sure that you are in Visual Mode.
5. Click on the image and then click on the Edit Image button that comes up.
6. Enter the Alternate Text in the "Edit Alternate Text" field.
7. Click on the "Update" button.
