Search engines (Google) crawls a website by using tools like "spiders" to crawl all pages and get data from each one in order for them to determine which page ranks for a given keyword/s. Search engines use bots/spiders, which are basically just programs with an algorithm that indexes and ranks website pages. There are a variety of different ways you regulate the frequency that your website is crawled. I'd suggest creating a free Google webmaster account, submiting your site's xml sitemap and you can get a lot of useful information about how your site is crawled from there.

Search engines have their own automated programs called web spiders and robots to read through new webpages and provide cache certificate. Once the webpages are successfully crawled these webpages are stored in search engine database. The process of updating your website pages in search engines is known as indexing.
Search engines do a great job since they give sufficient information regarding the validity of the websites as well. One can know whether a given website is a relevant one to visit or not, thanks to the meta descriptions found on the websites.

Search engines have two major functions: crawling and building an index, and providing search users with a ranked list of the websites they've determined are the most relevant. Each stop is a unique document (usually a web page, but sometimes a PDF, JPG, or other file). The search engines need a way to “crawl” the entire city and find all the stops along the way, so they use the best path available—links.

Search engine crawl website by search engine programs i.e. robots/spiders. When searcher searches a query on search engine then spiders crawl all relevant website and according to their rank on search, it shows the related results.
