Forum/blog commenting and social media marketing are great methods to build backlinks and drive traffic to your site. These aren't the only methods though. There's also link indexing, reverse engineering, Kindle traffic, etc. I suggest you look into and use these other methods too.

Traffic affects ranking . The more traffic you get on your site, the higher your rank will be. I suggest you focus on building links and driving traffic to your site. Your site's ranking will soon catch up.

 I would like to suggest you that you should do SEO off page strategies. Some off page strategies are forum post, blog comment, Social bookmarking, article submission etc . These are very important tools to improve the traffic of website. Good Luck
