 Advantages:

1) It's free
2) You can get targeted traffic
3) You get people who are actively looking for answers/solutions

Disadvantages:

1) It can be competitive
2) Therefore it can be slow
3) You need to create good content that people are actually interested in
4) You need to be proactive in building links
5) Google can come along and shut off your traffic with an algorithm change, which gives you uncertainty.

 Whether or not you benefit from Google traffic will depend on you. Will you get lots of traffic if you rank on Google for certain keywords? Sure! Of course, you will get traffic. Will that traffic conver to sales? Maybe or maybe not, just depending on whether or not the people coming in from Google search are actually in the mood to buy. The best option is to get people who are hopping in from the search engines to opt into a newsletter or email list so that you can entice them back later on after they have forgotten your link.

 I feel keyword research is the backbone of SEO. Otherwise it can be very competitive. Remember satisfaction consists in competition! The more competitive SEO is the more thrilling it can be. Actually there are no disadvantages of SEO if I am allowed to say so.
