As far as the search engines go, there's no such thing as too much content. As far as getting to the point for your visitors... there is a definite limit. If you've got a point to get to... get to it quickly, or give people enough hooks to keep them reading IF ITS NECESSARY FOR YOUR POINT.
But in general... treat it like a newspaper article. They give you the major points of the article in a neat summary in the first paragraph, so you can skim it and see if its what you're interested in. Then they flesh out the details afterwards.
Really it depends on what sort of information you're trying to present, and what reaction you're hoping to get from the content. This is copywriting territory... it would be worthwhile doing a hunt around for articles on the subject.
