How do I add "no follow" tag to affiliate links?

I've been reading a lot about "no follow" tags. I would like to add the tags
to my affiliate links as I have read that it prevents bleeding.
Any thoughts on that would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Randy

I can't remember the code off the top of my head, but I'm sure a quick google search will help you find it. It's really simple, just adding something like rel="nofollow" in there.

Hi Mark,

Does it matter where abouts in the code you place the rel="nofollow" or does it have to be at the end as in your example?

Thanks

Nope, doesn't matter.

You can go like this:

or if you've got a whole bunch of other stuff in your link, you can go:

so long as you keep the rel="nofollow" together it's fine.

Hi guys,
I noticed you mentioned the "no follow" tag to an affiliate link prevents BLEEDING.
Can someone tell me what that means? You can pm me if you'd like.

Haha, it sounds so dramatic. "BLEEDING!"

They're kind of talking about the PageRank of your page, and how linking to another site "passes on" a little bit of your PageRank. It's like the PageRank of a page is water, and each time you link to another site you spring a little leak.

Putting a "nofollow" on your links plugs this leak.

That's a really crude way of putting it. Be aware that "pagerank" is just Google's way of visualizing the strength of the links coming to your site and leaving your site -- it's really hard to explain, and people get so worked up about it, but it's just one part of Google's ranking algorithm so don't get too obsessed over it. The key points are these:

1) Don't be afraid to link to pages that are very good and relevant resources. The search engines see this as a good thing.
2) But if you're linking to sites that aren't very relevant to your site, or that you don't think are very good, or even sometimes with your affiliate links, you can put "nofollow" in the links.
3) It's also a good idea to "nofollow" links to your unimportant pages like privacy pages, contact pages, etc. These are unnecessary "leaks".

There's a brief bit about "pagerank sculpting" at the end of this lesson: https://www.affilorama.com/search-engine-optimization/how-to-get-your-website-indexed

Hi,
If it helps at all, I use a plug in called "robots meta" on my word press sites. Any page or post you do will have an option in the right side column whether you want to have the page/post either 1/ index, follow 2/ index, nofollow 3/ noindex, follow 4/ noindex, nofollow
This way you do not have to worry about the HTML code.

Thanks S
I presume I want to select NO Index and NO follow for those pages?

Does this not conflict with All-in-ONe SEO Plugin?

Also, do you know how in WP I can exclude the SIDEBAR and its widgtes form some of my pages?

Hi John,
It is your choice, If you do not want the pages indexed or followed then yes.

As for the All-in-one, I am not positive but I would say it over rides it & if you want no index or follow then the seo does not really matter as that is specifically for rankings. Someone from the staff here may be able to answer that better.

As far as I know you cannot exclude the sidebar from just certain pages. I installed a landing page http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaibCsEarE8 that way the side bar & widgets are not visible. I also use a plug in called "exclude pages" so only the pages I want accessible are able to be seen from any page or post.

Hope that helps

Hi Steven-or anyone else who would like to shed light!

Well I don't want to lose "link juice" but I don't know enough yet either! Do you leave e.g your Thank You page as Do Follow but No Index, or what, because I believe MArk has a lesson where he talks about putting a product item in there?

Also-you say" Any page or post you do will have an option in the right side column whether you want to have the page/post either 1/ index, follow 2/ index, nofollow 3/ noindex, follow 4/ noindex, "

Well I looked at my "About" and "Thank you " pages in my main WP site (not an AB theme)and couldn't for the life of me see any place in the right hand side with those options. Do you mean within the Settings of the plugin?

Also I need some advice please on what boxes to tick in the plug-in Settings. At the moment I have ticked the No Follow box on:
login and registration links;all admin pages;admin and register pages;category listings on pages;category listings on single posts;

and I disabled the date-based archives (becuase the plugin recommends this) and Redirected search results when referrer is external: even tho I don't know what these two options mean

I have left the NoFollow comments links unchecked. Is that good for SEO?

Then when I went to have a look at the url for the "About page" (which I thought was an admin page) I could'nt see any "No Follow" in the url . Am I looking in the wrong place?

Also if you think I should have ticked any other boxes please let me know because I don't know if I've done it right.

Thanks

john

Why do you want to have nofollow?

So as not to lose link juice mainly. Also on one of my personal sites which doesn't talk about just one product I don't want a page on classified ads showing up against my name (which is mainly related to health and wealth) which has been indexed and appears in the Search results further down the page from some of my most read posts, but has yet to yield a single sale.

Am I safe in putting NoFollow and NoIndex on the page mentioned and on my Contact page (which only has an email address on it) and on My Privacy and Disclaimer pages??

At the moment I have checked the boxes in Robots meta plugin against the following headings:
NoFollow category listings on pages
Nofollow category listings on single posts
No follow login and registration links
All admin pages
subpages of the home page
NoIndexthe comment RSS feeds

Have I done the right thing or am I losing out on SEO by doing the above? I want to hear from the more experienced!
