 Hopefully he's looking for English definitions but still... should know what IM is.

In any case, Internet Marketing is advertising/promoting online and "SEO" is (now in 2014), the act of optimizing your content/website for getting discovered AND conversions.

But is the term "SEO" dead?

 In one way what you are saying is true. There has to be much of SEO in online business. Of course methods like 'word of mouth' and PPC do not need SEO.

 Typically speaking, internet marketing is any activity which you would use to promote your business (whether your business is online or offline) to get potential customers to visit your website. These activities can include direct advertising such as PPC/Adwords or even posting on forums or pinning your photos onto Pinterest. Any activity that advertises your business is a form of internet marketing.

SEO is not really a form of internet marketing as it is very indirect. And, while you will get some traffic from Google based on your position in search, it might not be as qualified as if you had simply used Adwords or Facebook ads to drive traffic to your pages.

So in this sense, internet marketing is just another form of promotional activity used to generate customer awareness and excitement about the product or service you are advertising.

And, there are thousands of niches of products and services that can be marketed online, from shoes and handbags to books and webmaster services. Even offline services and products can be advertised or marketed online.
