Email Marketing Question!!!

Ok I am setting up an email campaign for one of my sites and I would like to include a free report in one of my emails.

What's the easiest way to set up a download page in Wordpress for my free report?

Hi,

You can setup a page in wordpress with the download link and use the exclude from navigation plugin to keep it from being linked to. You will also need to tag the page for no indexing/crawling which can be done with a plugin as well.

Yes, Google, and most likely other search engines, indexes PDF files.

To prevent uploaded PDFs from being indexed, you have to disallow crawler access to the pdf file through your robots.txt file. Edit it so that it has something like this:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-content/uploads/2011/03/your-report.pdf

Replace /wp-content/uploads/2011/03/your-report.pdf with the actual path to your ebook.

However, there is no actual robots.txt file if you use Wordpress. You can use the KB Robots.txt plugin to edit the virtual robots.txt file generated by Wordpress.

Thanks for the great suggestions, but I actually found a solution so simple I thought I'd share it with everyone.

In Wordpress, all you have to do is create a new page call it whatever you wish. From there, you simply:
click the upload/insert image icon
make sure you're in the upload image from computer tab
click the choose file button
find the pdf file you want and select it
upload the file (wordpress will allow you to upload an 'image' in pdf format
wait for the edit details portion and where it says Title, input your desired text (e.g., click here to download)
click save
That's all! Update the page then test it out. You will find that when you click on the link, Wordpress will automatically open your pdf 'image' in Adobe Reader. From there you can right-click the document and save a copy.

Thanks again for the help but I really think this is the simplest way.

Hi all,

Even though we are getting a fair amount of clicks for an ad that offers a free report, our website statistics do not show any newsletter signups or report downloads. Unless the metrics are not reflecting reality, this means we have a 100% bounce rate. Your report can be easily branded using special software (included), with your unique ClickBank Affiliate Hoplink. This means that when your subscriber reads your free report they will see your "hoplink" at the bottom of every page and a final larger call-to-action at the end of the report. These reports have been written to offer your subscriber an insight into how the ClickBank product could benefit them. They have been professionally designed with matching graphics and converted to brandable pdf documents for easy online viewing.

Hi,

You should still protect the page and file from being indexed if you want to keep it exclusive to those that sign up.

As everyone else said, noindex the page. Also consider tagging your PDF links with google analytics code to track them, see the below links for more info
