Promoting A Vendor With Phone Number Affects Sales?

I have been doing this for a while and have been promoting a few vendors on my main site that have phone numbers on their site which is the site I send people to.

Sometimes I think that isn't a good Idea because the person I am sending to the vendor could order or book whatever they are promoting over the phone and cut me completely out of any commission I would get if they were to do everything over the web.

One example I believe Mark Ling runs Rocket language and I promote it on my travel site. I don't send a lot of traffic to this site but would have thought the amount of traffic I have sent over the years that at least one person would have signed up through me. However after looking over the site better there is a phone number on the site.

Could I have sold many language lessons over the years if there had been no phone number or do most people think that doesn't make much difference that there is a phone number there.

Hello Mark,

It's possible that putting the vendor's phone number on your website can prevent you from receiving a commission from a possible sale. The vendor's phone number or any of their contact details on your website are considered a 'distraction'. Remember that your goal is to get your visitors to click your affiliate links. So all possible distractions on your website should be avoided.

Hi Mark,

You raised a point or two here that deserves some serious thinking over, particularly that bit about how you can earn your commission if the users decided to call the merchant to place their order. Most merchants would usually ask how a user found their website or offer and that's how they find out the source of the sale. But how they know which exact affiliate, I don't know.

I have forwarded this to a senior Affilorama staff and will let you know as soon as I have feedback.

Have a good day!

Mary T, I think you misread my question. I don't have the vendors phone number on my web site, the phone number in on the vendors web site which I send my visitors to so they can look at there information and hopefully buy something.

Hi Mark,

I don't think that having a phone number on the site will affect sales. Most of the time the phone number is there more as a trust signal than as an actual method of purchase, unless we're talking about something with a traditional background in phone sales, like insurance or travel bookings or whatever.

Here at Affilorama we have a phone number on the website, but our support staff will send people back to the website to purchase. Otherwise we'd have to set up a whole other payment infrastructure. I expect Rocket Languages has the same set up.

With Rocket Languages I know that cold traffic to their site doesn't do very well. But when you start sending targeted traffic (people looking for language learning products, courses, reviews, etc, rather than people looking for "free lessons") it converts well enough.

If your traffic has lower buyer intent, send people to their free trial, or put the signup form on your page. They have a good follow-up sequence with automatic promotions built in, and that will work better than just sending traffic to the sales page.

Hi, I think it won't be affect the sales. This will increase the trustworthiness of your website for the visitors. The promotion banner or landing page should be emphasized, not the phone number. Any way, the visitors will buy if he/she thinks it is good for them. So the tracking tools or report will be quite essential.
